Does God Want War? Of Course Not, the Pope Says.

Christians like Ted Cruz routinely insist that God wants the United States to fight Benjamin Netanyahu’s wars. They are wrong, Pope Leo XIV said on Sunday.

“Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” the Pope preached during Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: ‘Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.’”

Leo specifically prayed for Middle Eastern Christians, recognizing that “in many cases, they cannot live fully the rites of these holy days.”

It is hard to imagine how anyone could use Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to justify spilling blood, but it happens all the time. Jeffrey Sachs and Sybil Fares explained why the practice is so perverse last month.
